The son of a tannery worker, Sillitoe worked in factories from the age of 14.
Alan Sillitoe's short story collections include The Ragman's Daughter (1963), Men, Women and Children (1973), Collected Stories (1995) and Alligator Playground (1998). He also published several volumes of poetry, including Poems (1971), with Ted Hughes and Ruth Fainlight: Storm and Other Poems (1974), and Barbarians and Other Poems (1973).
