Im Jahre 1980 stieß Clark zur Band als Keyboardverstärkung für die On-Location-Tour der Dire Straits für das Album Making Movies.Auf Love over Gold war er zum ersten Mal mit den Dire Straits auf einem Album zu hören.

Als kind kreeg Clark al pianolessen en speelde hij in pubs.Hij zette zijn muzikale educatie voort op het Durham Technical College en zo kreeg hij een uitnodiging voor het Guildhall School of Music.
