A.P. Carter was a pioneer of bluegrass music who sang and collected songs with his wife Sara and their children. He recorded for various labels from 1927 to 1941 and influenced many artists, such as the Carter Family, the Stanley Brothers, and the Kingston Trio. He died in 1960 at the age of 70.

He worked as a carpenter and traveling salesman before marrying Sara Dougherty in 1915 and recording for the first time at the Bristol Sessions of 1927. He died in 1960 and was buried near his wife in Virginia.
