The 50 Beowulf was developed for the AR-15 rifle in 2001. The developer Bill Alexander of Alexander Arms designed the specialized cartridge to improve stopping power for short to medium ranges over the 5.56x45mm round. This low-velocity, heavy caliber is most known for being engineered to stop vehicles by disabling the engine block.

When all it takes to convert an existing 5.56 NATO AR into a big-bore thumper is a .50 Beowulf upper, a new bolt and maybe a new magazine, it gives plenty of incentive to take the plunge.
