Richard Lee Petty (born July 2, 1937), nicknamed " the King ", is an American former stock car racing driver who competed from 1958 to 1992 in the former NASCAR Grand National and Winston Cup Series (now called the NASCAR Cup Series ), most notably driving the No. 43 Plymouth / Pontiac for Petty Enterprises.

Su primera victoria la obtuvo en Southern States Fairgrounds en 1960. Su segundo título en 1967 lo consiguió con un récord de 27 victorias en 48 disputadas, diez de ellas consecutivas. Ese año fue la única vez que logró ganar las 500 Millas Sureñas de Darlington. En 1975 logró el mismo récord pero de la era moderna, con 13 triunfos en 30 carreras.
