The XI Gran Premio d'Italia, the fourth major international Grand Prix of the year, was notable for the gigantic battle between Nuvolari in the 3-liter Maserati monoposto against Fagioli and Chiron both racing with monoposto Alfa Romeos.
In the Italian Grand Prix, Fagioli benefited from Nuvolari's misfortune after he got a puncture while leading with two laps remaining. The Monza GP was run in the afternoon, held as three heats to qualify for the final.
The 1933 Grand Prix of Italy had been postponed to take place on the same day as the Monza Grand Prix. This happened because the circuit was not available earlier due to Monza renovation works resulting in well-fitted pits and new imposing grandstands.
