Ghostley was best known for her roles as bumbling witch Esmeralda (1969–72) on Bewitched, as Cousin Alice (1970–71) on Mayberry R.F.D., and as Bernice Clifton (1986–93) on Designing Women, for which she received an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1992.
Alice Ghostley portrayed Esmeralda (1969-1972), Samantha's witch maid, whose magic often went awry. Her first appearance on Bewitched was as a klutzy mortal maid, Naomi Hogan, in the second season episode, Maid to Order (1966).
Two years later, her character Esmeralda on Bewitched (1964) should fill the void after Lorne, playing Aunt Clara, had suddenly died in 1968. Ghostley, who became a regular as the insecure Aunt Esmerelda, actually made her first appearance on "Bewitched" as a bumbling mortal maid.
Esmeralda is a witch who becomes the Stephenses' housekeeper in 1969. Endora suggests to Samantha that she should have a witch as a housekeeper to make things easier during her second pregnancy. Esmeralda's powers are faulty due to nervousness and anxiety so she often accidentally causes trouble...
