The Dutch education system is unique in the world. Under article 23 of the Constitution, the state provides equal funding for both public-authority and private schools. 9 de abr. de 2024 · Most Dutchies send their children to public schools and are taught entirely in Dutch. This is a great option if you plan to stay in the Netherlands, but your child generally needs to have a basic level of Dutch first, especially if they’re older.
Public schools in the Netherlands. Public schools are government-funded, and all children, including expats, can attend them free of charge. Most schools do ask for what is known as a 'parental contribution' ( ouderbijdrage ). This covers activities such as excursions and extra-curricular activities.
Primary school in the Netherlands ( basisonderwijs) Elementary or primary school ( lagere school) has eight grades, known as groepen, ranging from Groep 1 (4-year olds) to Groep 8 (12-year olds). It is not compulsory to attend primary school until Groep 2, at age five, but most children begin in Groep 1 already at the age of four.

Education is divided over schools for different age groups, some of which are divided in streams for different educational levels. Schools are furthermore divided in public, special (religious), and general-special (neutral) schools, although there are also a few private schools.
