The progenitor, and earliest-attested ancestor, of the Mosley family was Ernald de Mosley (fl. 12th century), Lord of the Manor of Moseley, Staffordshire, during the reign of King John. The family were prominent landholders in Staffordshire and seated at Rolleston Hall, near Burton upon Trent.
