Eventually, Iphitus catches up with Heracles, and convinces the demi-god to aide him in the search for Eurytus’ cattle. At that moment though, Heracles is struck by a bout of madness, and Heracles throws Iphitus from the walls of Tiryns, killing the son of Eurytus.
Heracles' advances were spurned by the king and his sons, except for one: Iole's brother Iphitus. Heracles killed the king and his sons—excluding Iphitus —and abducted Iole. Iphitus became Heracles' best friend.
Iphitos or Īphitus ( / ˈɪfɪtəs /; Ancient Greek: Ἴφιτος) is the name of six individuals in Greek mythology . Iphitos, son of Eurytus, king of Oechalia. As Iole 's brother, he was Heracles ' brother-in-law and, according to one version of the myth, also his lover. [1]
The angry Hercules abandoned Oechalia but stole the king’s cattle. The monarch suspected him but his son Iphitus defended him and went in search of Hercules and the cattle. They met and in an attack of madness Hercules killed Iphitus. As punishment he was sold as a slave by Hermes to Omphale, Queen of Lydia, for a period of three years.
Heracles killed the king and his sons–excluding Iphitus–and abducted Iole. Iphitus became Heracles' best friend. However, once again, Hera drove Heracles mad and he threw Iphitus over the city wall to his death.
