When Princess Celestia orders the Mane Six to recover the Elements of Harmony from a nearby tower, the changelings take the form of the six ponies and fight them, preventing them from reaching the Elements. They subsequently take the ponies and Princess Celestia captive.

The Changelings were born from a monstrous plant that sprouted in a magic pool, which was filled with the remains of various creatures. Starswirl the Bearded came across the pool on one of his journeys, and left a warning sign on it before departing in a hurry.
