George Latham MC & Bar (1 January 1881 – 9 July 1939) was a Welsh international footballer and coach. A veteran of the Second Boer War and World War I, he was awarded the Military Cross for his actions in Gaza, Palestine and Turkey between 1917 and 1918. He finished his military career at the rank of captain.
George Latham coached Cardiff City during their greatest period of success between 1911 and 1936. They reached the FA Cup final in 1925, became the first team to take the FA Cup out of England with a 1-0 win over Arsenal in 1927 and only missed out on the League Championship by goal difference.
Latham is the oldest League debutant in Cardiff's history at 41. When playing away against Blackburn, two of Cardiff's players took ill so Latham was pressed into service. When Cardiff won the Welsh Cup in 1912, Latham featured in the final and made the unique gesture of giving his medal to Cardiff's regular Bob Lawrie who had missed the game.
Biography. Welshman George Latham did not enjoy a very successful footballing career, but that all changed when he turned to coaching. He started as an amateur player with his hometown team Newtown FC in 1897 before spending seven seasons at Liverpool, where he played just 19 games.
