This is the girl who drew Ed Edd n Eddy slash for fun we’re talking about. If it was concept, I see two probable reasons: Rebeca knew she wanted to make Marceline more prominent, but hadn’t decided how yet.
Any attempts on the part of Rebecca Sugar, a known shota and loli "artist" (drawn child porn) to do damage control fails, especially when considering the scene where ruby and sapphire kiss before fusing looks like the drawn image of Eddy and Double D before fucking.
