The Duilio class was a pair of ironclad turret ships built for the Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina) in the 1870s and 1880s. The two ships, Duilio and Enrico Dandolo, were fitted with the largest guns available, 450 mm (17.7 in) rifled muzzle-loading guns, and were the largest, fastest and most powerful ships of their day.

The basic idea of an all-big-gun ship appears to have been conceived in 1873, as a response to the Caio Duilio –class ironclads armed with (at the time) four 50-ton, 15-inch guns. A series of four sketch designs were drawn up at the request of the Royal Navy’s Director of Naval Construction (DNC) Nathaniel Barnaby to meet the Italian threat.
