Verlaine died in New York City on January 28, 2023, at the age of 73. According to his former Television band mate, Richard Lloyd, Verlaine had "been sick for quite a while", with prostate cancer, which had metastasized.
Verlaine's death was announced by Jesse Paris Smith, the daughter of long-time associate and collaborator Patti Smith. She did not specify a cause, saying that he died "after a brief illness".
