Methods, post-method, and métodos. This is the first of two articles by Scott Thornbury for TeachingEnglish. 'A language teaching method is a single set of procedures which teachers are to follow in the classroom. Methods are usually based on a set of beliefs about the nature of language and learning.' (Nunan, 2003, p. 5).
Summary. From the survey of approaches and methods presented in this book we have seen that the history of language teaching in the last one hundred years has been characterized by a search for more effective ways of teaching second or foreign languages.
The post method era is a concept developed by Kumaravadivelu, a Professor Emeritus at the San José State University in California, U.S.A. It has been developed to tackle a new understanding of the diverse socio-cultural milieus in which language education is embedded.
Kumaravadivelu proposes ten micro-strategies that are the consequence of adopting a setting-sensitive approach to designing and implementing a language-learning programme. Maximise learning opportunities; Facilitate negotiated interaction; Minimize perceptual mismatches; Activate intuitive heuristics (i.e., problem-solving approaches)
