4 de sept. de 2014 · Went out must come from when lights were candle or gas lighten - this the lights would go out as they couldn't exactly be turned off. A candle needs to be 'put out' manually or would 'go out' by itself.

The word "light" is a common term for a lamp, a ceiling bulb, or any other appliance that creates light. If "the light in my room went out" it is probably a burned-out bulb.

"Went out" could be that, or they could have gone out for some other reason: a failure at the local electric power plant, snow causing a tree to fall on the power line to the village, or anything else.
Well, "switch off" and "turn off" are ways to describe the actions that humans perform to put lights out ("switch off" refers to lights that have switches). If you knew a certain character was turning off the lights, and want do describe them doing so, you could say "Tom switched the lights off."
