When it opened, Tunel funicular in Istanbul became the world’s second subway, and the first time ever a funicular was constructed underground.

In Istanbul there are two funicular lines: Karaköy-Beyoğlu Tünel. The Tünel funicular is the second oldest underground transport after the London metro. The construction of the funicular was instigated by the French engineer Eugene Henri Gavand, who saw the necessity to connect the two business districts at the time.

The Tünel (English: Tunnel, designated as the F2 line on the Istanbul transport map) is a historic, underground, rubber-tyred funicular line in Istanbul, Turkey. It has two stations, connecting Karaköy and Beyoğlu .
The tunnel, whose construction dates to the Ottoman Period, is the world’s first underground funicular system. Karaköy Tunnel, which is the second metro in the world after the London metro in terms of underground public transportation system, has been the meeting point of Istanbulites from past to present.
Inaugurated on 17 January 1875, Istanbul’s Tunnel ( Tünel) is the world’s shortest and third-oldest passenger terminal, after the underground systems of London and New York. This one-stop funicular climbs the steeply uphill for 500 meters from Karaköy to Tünel Square at the southern end of Istiklal Caddesi in the Beyoğlu district.
