His grandfather, Winthrop Sargent IV, descended from one of the oldest colonial families, had failed in the merchant-shipping business in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and had moved his family to Philadelphia.
1856 - 1925. Born in Florence of American parents, Sargent spent most of his life in Europe. He studied painting in Italy and then from 1874 with Carolus-Duran in Paris. He later became a friend of Monet. He was a landscape painter as well as a society portraitist and mural painter.
