Café Müller is a dance choreographed by Pina Bausch set to the music of Henry Purcell. [1] It has been performed regularly since its creation and in May 1978 was performed and filmed at the Opernhaus, and broadcast on German television in December of that year. [2] Performance history

Since 1980, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch presented Café Müller as a double bill with The Rite of Spring. Rolf Borzik designed the original stage set. Peter Pabst adapted the set for a performance in 1987 in Athens (Greece).

From French duo Régis Obadia and Joëlle Bouvier’s surreal chair tableaux in La Chambre (1988) to Greek choreographer Dimítris Papaïoánnou’s hybrid performances, Café Müller is interwoven in the fabric of contemporary dance.
A woman is flushed on to the dark stage by the revolving door and darts between the empty chairs, then disappears stage right. This is the beginning of Café Müller, a piece by Pina Bausch. If it were up to Boris Charmatz, who became the director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal last August, this piece would never end.
In 2023, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting the Théâtre de la Ville to present Café Müller by Pina Bausch. Café Müller is a fundamental part of the dance landscape and its history in the 20th century.
