Spanish Town is the capital and the largest town in the parish of St. Catherine in the historic county of Middlesex, Jamaica. It was the Spanish and British capital of Jamaica from 1534 until 1872.
Hace 3 días · Spanish Town, city, southeast-central Jamaica. It is situated along the Rio Cobre, some 10 miles (16 km) west of Kingston. Probably laid out by Diego Columbus (c. 1523), it was originally called Santiago de la Vega (St. James of the Plain), and it was Jamaica’s capital from 1692 until 1872.
Spanish Town is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Jamaica, founded by the Spanish in 1534. It has many historical buildings, such as the Cathedral of St. James, the Old House of Assembly, Rodney's Memorial and the Cast Iron Bridge.

Built on an ambitious grid plan laid out around two squares, it remained an unfortified town and was vulnerable to raids from the sea.
