John Phillips was the leader of the Mamas & the Papas and a songwriter of folk rock and pop music. He wrote "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" and co-organized the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

The Mamas & the Papas was formed by the husband and wife John Phillips (formerly of the Journeymen) and Michelle Phillips, along with Denny Doherty(formerly of the Mugwumps). Both of these earlier acts were folkgroups active in 1964 and 1965.
