Compensation is a mental math strategy for multi-digit addition that involves adjusting one of the addends to make the equation easier to solve. Some students may prefer this strategy as an alternative to left-to-right addition or the breaking up the second number strategy.
What is the Compensation Strategy? Compensation involves adding or subtracting from numbers to make calculations easier to work with. We typically use compensation to work with friendly numbers (sometimes called benchmark numbers), like multiples of five or ten.

These friendly numbers are easier to add. Example 1: 87 + 399. You take 1 from 87 and move it to 399. Now you have 86 + 400. 86 + 400 = 486. You’ve now made a simpler problem to solve.
