Puss in Boots appeared as a playable character in Shrek 2, Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After. In Shrek 2, he is introduced as a boss and is unlocked when defeating him. He also appears in Shrek Super Slam as one of the 10 starting characters.
On November 6, 2018, it was reported by Variety that Illumination's CEO and founder Chris Meledandri had been tasked by Universal Pictures to produce both Shrek 5 and Puss in Boots 2, with the original cast expected to return.

In Shrek Forever After, Puss is shown in the alternate reality as retired from his days in the boots and now overweight from all the heavy cream he had drunk since then. His overweight appearance and lethargic demeanor parallel to Garfield.
Shrek is discouraged, but Puss encourages him to continue pursuing Fiona. During the ambush, the ogres are captured by the Pied Piper, though Shrek and Fiona managed to escape with the intervention of Puss and Donkey. Shrek insists Fiona kiss him, saying it will fix everything, but because Fiona still does not truly love him; it is ineffective.
Plot. In a flashback, King Harold and Queen Lillian have lost hope of their daughter, Princess Fiona being freed from her curse after so many years of her being at the Dragon’s Keep. Despite their deal with Fairy Godmother, they go to Rumpelstiltskin for help.
