Chris was originally among the people that played the prank on Hannah. In the demo showed at Gamescom in 2014 which had the section of Chapter 6 with Chris and Ashley, Chris's doll was in the dollhouse among the others, right next to Ashley's doll.
Leave Chris behind and then you get to choose weather he can go after the voice or not. If you choose to investigate the voice you can find the totem but if you open the trap door he will die. Moral of the story: You can leave Chris behind just don't open the trap door ever.
