First settled in the 1830s by English settlers Joseph and Betsy Kettlestrings, it was called Oak Ridge and served as a stopping place for farmers taking their produce into Chicago. Following the devastating Chicago fire of 1871, the population grew rapidly, and the village was renamed Oak Park.
Oak Park became widely known as the "World's Largest Village." As a mature community, Oak Park struggled to remain vibrant. As part of its efforts, Oak Park embraced its rich heritage and noted legacies of Wright, Hemingway, and others.
History. In 1835, Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings, immigrants from Yorkshire, England, staked out a farm and built a house near Lake Street and Harlem Avenue, west of Chicago.

Oak Park devised a different strategy, which would use planning to ensure that desegregation would not lead to resegregation. The village board created a Community Relations Commission charged with preventing discrimination, forestalling violent neighborhood defense mechanisms, and setting a high standard of behavior as the community prepared for imminent racial change.
Known internationally for its historic architecture, the Village of Oak Park, Illinois has 25 houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, including the home occupied by Wright and his family until 1909.
