Coase proposed that the comparative costs of organizing transactions through markets, rather than within firms, are the primary determinants of the size and scope of firms.
In his 1937 study, “The Nature of the Firm,” a then-26-year-old Coase posed two questions: Why are there organizations of the type represented by firms, and why is each firm of a certain size?
