Coordinates: 36°59′10″S 174°28′48″E. Karekare is a small coastal settlement in West Auckland, New Zealand, sandwiched between the Waitākere Ranges and a large black sand surf beach. Geography. It is located 35 kilometres (22 mi) west of Auckland city centre, south of the larger beach of Piha.
Karekare is a secluded black sandy beach near Piha Beach, famous for its surfing culture and film location. The beach is part of the Karekare Regional Park, which has a campsite, walking trails and picnic areas, as well as the stunning Karekare Falls.
Top ways to experience Karekare Beach and nearby attractions. We stayed a short drive from here and preferred this beach a lot more than Piha. A more chilled vibe and not so intense. The waterfall is a 2mib walk from the car park and there’s more walks to the south right by car park also. Very handy spot.
