  5. Two portraits of the older Hercule-François confirm the identification: the Clouet studio portrait in the Louvre, made when Hercule-François was about 12 years old, and the later portrait in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, painted when he was 18.

  6. Hercule-François was the fourth and youngest son of Henry II of France and Catherine de Médicis. Marriage between him and Elizabeth I was proposed in 1572 and he courted the Queen again between 1579 and 1581.
