Chester Thompson (born December 11, 1948) is an American drummer best known for his tenures with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Weather Report, Santana, Genesis and Phil Collins. Thompson has performed with his jazz group, the Chester Thompson Trio, since 2011.
Earthy, energetic, exciting are all terms that have been used to describe the musical style of Santana keyboardist (1983-2009), Chester Thompson. He joined the band in 1983, and brought an impressive blend of talent, versatility and skill that helped drive the group’s powerful blues-based, Latin-flavored rock ‘n roll sound.
Highlights of his tenure include co-writing and co-producing their landmark 1987 instrumental recording Blues For Salvador along with it’s GRAMMY-winning title track, and his foundational contributions to their 1999 commercial zenith Supernatural, which sold over 30 million copies and won nine GRAMMY awards including Album of the Year.
