In this first episode of a two-part biography of Leo Tolstoy, Alan Yentob travels to the depths of Russia to discover his origins and education. Born into bourgeois luxury and perpetually endowed with financial security, the young Tolstoy seems to have been a thoroughly unattractive personality.
Alan Yentob reveals a difficult and troubled youth, obsessed with sex and gambling, who turned writer while serving as a soldier in Chechnya and the Crimea. Alan's expedition takes him to the Tatar city of Kazan, where Tolstoy was a teenager, as well as the idyllic Tolstoy country estate.
