"Psychotic Reaction" was born out of an instrumental that Count Five played for six months before their manager Sol Ellner, Kenn Ellner's father, suggested that rhythm guitarist John "Sean" Byrne write lyrics for it.
The Irish singer and guitarist John “Sean” Byrne, a student at San Jose City College, wrote “Psychotic Reaction.” The inspiration for the song’s title came to Byrne while attending a health class, reflecting the mental turmoil caused by heartbreak. Initially, the song did not gain much traction on the charts.
