Eddie Jefferson (August 3, 1918 – May 9, 1979) was an American jazz vocalist and lyricist. He is credited as an innovator of vocalese, a musical style in which lyrics are set to an instrumental composition or solo. Jefferson himself claims that his main influence was Leo Watson.

Jefferson had recorded a superb version of the Coleman Hawkins solo for “The Jazz Singer”, so on “The Main Man”, Jefferson sang his setting of Moody’s improvisation. Hampton’s arrangement puts the standard into a surging Latin-rock groove, with a highly effective transition into straight-ahead swing on the last bridge.
