Joe Ely (/ˈiːli/; born February 9, 1947) [3] is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was "one of the main movers" of Austin, Texas's progressive country scene in the 1970s and '80s. [3]
Over his four-decade career, he’s been at the forefront of Outlaw Country, Alt-Country, Texas Country and Americana, and has been recognized as one of the best songwriters of his generation. “There’s no mistaking a Joe Ely album,” wrote noted Dallas Morning News critic Mario Tarradell.

Joe Ely, a Texas-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist, has developed a significant cult following, both as a solo performer and as a parttime member of the legendary band the Flatlanders. Ely has released more than a dozen albums under his own name, beginning with his critically lauded solo debut in 1977.

Joe Ely (born February 9, 1947) is an Austin, Texas, honky-tonk/country musician. Ely, born in Amarillo, spent his formative years from age 12 in Lubbock, Texas. Shortly after high school, in 1970, with fellow Lubbock musicians Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, he formed The Flatlanders.
