From prehistoric pottery to ancient Greek amphoras, from the rise of porcelain in Asia and Europe to the Arts and Crafts movement in England and the U.S., ceramic traditions have long fascinated artists and infiltrated their practices.
Turner Prize-winning artist, Grayson Perry is known for his ceramic vases and tapestries. Perry’s coil pots have complex surfaces which use a range of techniques. For this pot we’re going to follow a process of sgraffito, inlay of underglaze and oxide, and a single bisque fire and glaze fire approach.

Ladi Kwali (1925-1984) was one of the first Nigerian potters to achieve international recognition as a coil pottery artist, and her works engage with both indigenous pre-20th century traditions and twentieth century Nigerian modernism.
