It is in the town that grew up around it, Bury St Edmunds in the county of Suffolk, England. It was a centre of pilgrimage as the burial place of the Anglo-Saxon martyr -king Saint Edmund , killed by the Great Heathen Army of Danes in 869.
Located in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, the abbey was once one of the richest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England. Its remains are extensive and include the complete 14th-century Great Gate and Norman Tower, as well as the impressive ruins and altered west front of the immense church.
The remains of Bury St Edmunds Abbey today are extensive, but even so do little justice to what was once one of the largest and grandest monasteries in England. Its importance led to its destruction: when Henry VIII closed the abbey in 1539, it was systematically demolished to demonstrate the king’s power and control.
