At its foundation, the word universitas was first coined. [3] [4] The university's emblem carries the motto, Alma Mater Studiorum ("Nourishing mother of studies"), the date A.D. 1088. [5] With over 90,000 students, the University of Bologna is one of the largest universities in Europe.

El Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna es la universidad más antigua del mundo occidental. Es también la primera universidad italiana que se organiza desde 1989 con una estructura multicampus: Bologna, Forlì, Cesena Ravenna y Rimini, a los que se añade desde 1998, la sede de Buenos Aires.
