Samuel "Sholem" Schwarzbard ( Russian: Самуил Исаакович Шварцбурд, romanized : Samuil Isaakovich Shvartsburd; Yiddish: שלום שװאַרצבאָרד; French: Samuel 'Sholem' Schwarzbard; 18 August 1886 – 3 March 1938) was a Russian-French Yiddish poet.

Samuel “Sholem” Schwarzbard (18 August 1886 – 3 March 1938) was a Russian-French Yiddish poet, a communist and anarchist. He wrote poetry in Yiddish under the pen name of Baal-Khaloymes. Schwarzbard is known for organizing Jewish community defense against pogroms and for the assassination of Ukrainian nationalist leader Symon Petliura in 1926.
Sholom Schwartzbard killed Simon Petlura in an act of revenge. He admitted his crime and a French jury acquitted him in 1927. For Hannah Arendt, Schwartzbard’s actions show that revenge can, in certain circumstances, be in the service of justice.
