Secondaries can only take you so far, but the fundamental must be studying Hegel, Hegel, Hegel. To this end I would suggest primarily reading the Lectures on the History of Philosophy at first, specifically Aristotle, Boehme ...

So I bought the supposed introductory work to Hegel's philosophy, Phenomenology of Spirit, and started reading it.

Hegel was talking about how "gems" of ideas can be found in each part of our history. Often, these are overlooked because they "clash" with the thoughts of the day. He felt that we should mine these gems and form a synthesis, or harmony with them. That all we ever really need to know has already been portrayed in one form or another.
