Obafemi Awolowo University ( OAU) is a federal university in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. [1] [2] The university was founded in 1961 and classes commenced in October 1962 [3] as the University of Ife by the regional government of Western Nigeria, which was led by Samuel Ladoke Akintola.

Obafemi Awolowo University is a federal government owned and operated Nigerian university. It was established in 1962 as the University of Ife. In 1987 it was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of the university’s founding fathers and eminent lawyer, nationalist, and politician.
