Sir John Gladstone, 1st Baronet, FRSE (11 December 1764 – 7 December 1851) was a Scottish merchant, planter and Tory politician best known for being the father of British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.

Owned large sugar plantations in Jamaica and Demerara, and after the Abolition of Slavery in 1833 received the largest payment made by the Slave Compensation Committee. 2 related objects.
This photograph was made around the time Gladstone was created a Baronet. His philanthropic investments in canals, railways, churches, and schools were made possible, in part, by the profits he earned from the slave trade.
