Tommy McClennan was born on the J.E. Sligh Farm near Yazoo City, Mississippi, on April 8, 1908. While growing up, he taught himself to play guitar influenced by Delta masters Rubin Lacy, Charley Patton, Ishman Bracey and Tommy Johnson.

Tommy McClennan grew up in Mississippi before moving to Chicago to begin his professional career. Although his recording career was brief, he was as prolific songwriter, and storyteller. Many of the delta blues songs he brought to the urban Midwest later became electric blues hits.
