Eugenius was a Christian and former teacher who became emperor with the support of Arbogast, a Frankish general. He opposed Theodosius I, the Eastern emperor, in a civil war and was defeated and executed at the Battle of the Frigidus.

Eugenius was a professor of rhetoric who was proclaimed emperor in the West by Arbogast in 393. He was defeated and killed by Theodosius I in 394, ending the last pagan reaction in Rome.
