Apostle, (from Greek apostolos, “person sent”), any of the 12 disciples chosen by Jesus Christ. The term is sometimes also applied to others, especially Paul , who was converted to Christianity a few years after Jesus’ death.

An apostle (/ ə ˈ p ɒ s əl /), in its literal sense, is an emissary. The word is derived from Ancient Greek ἀπόστολος ( apóstolos ), literally "one who is sent off", itself derived from the verb ἀποστέλλειν ( apostéllein ), "to send off".
Each of the four listings of apostles in the New Testament [30] indicate that all the apostles were men. The canonical gospels and the book of Acts give varying names of the Twelve Apostles. The list in the Gospel of Luke differs from Matthew and Mark on one point.
