Overview. The trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator) is native to Ohio and the nation's largest waterfowl. Their populations once experienced severe declines. They were killed for food and skins, first by Native Americans and then by Europeans. The plumage trade peaked in the early 1800s and swan populations were dramatically reduced by the mid-1800s.
