In 1989, Walford joined Pixies bassist Kim Deal in her new project The Breeders at the request of Steve Albini (under the pseudonyms Shannon Doughton & Mike Hunt), with whom he recorded their first album, Pod (1990), also appearing for live performances in drag to suit his stage name.

Walford agreed to play on the album under the pseudonym "Shannon Doughton". A week of rehearsal took place at Wiggs's house in Bedfordshire, England, and Pod was recorded in ten days in Edinburgh, Scotland. They used the remaining time to record a Peel Session and a video for "Hellbound."

Shannon Doughton is also known as Mike Hunt, but was born Britt Walford. They opened for Nirvana on a European tour in July 1992. Breeders drummer Jim Macpherson was very green at the time.
