The band formed in 1983 in South London with an initial lineup of Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar, formerly of the Wild Swans and the Jazz Butcher), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson (keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar) and Benny Staples replacing Paul Hookham (drums).
Frontman Rolo McGinty told us about writing for The Woodentops, about his kit struggles over the years, and his favourite new guitar. The band’s current members are Rolo, Simon Mawby, Aine O’Keeffe, Frank de Freitas and Paul Ashby.

21 de oct. de 2018 · Initially the group was Rolo McGinty on guitar and vocals, Alice Thompson on keyboards, Simon Mawby on guitar, James Rawlings on bass and Paul Hookham on drums. Their early influences of Can, Kraftwerk, the Feelies and Suicide were mixed with rockabilly and strummed acoustic guitars, producing a kind of rhythmic beat music.
