Ali al-Assad (né al-Wahsh; 1875 – 1963) was a Syrian farmer and tribal leader who was the father of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and grandfather of current president Bashar al-Assad.
The Assad family originates from Ali Sulayman al-Wahsh, Hafez al-Assad's father, who was born in 1875 and lived in the village of Qardaha in the coastal Syrian mountains. The locals reportedly nicknamed him "Wahsh", Arabic for "wild beast", because he was physically strong and a good fighter.

Ali Sulayman al-Assad was the father of Hafez al-Assad and the grandfather of Bashar al-Assad. During the time of the French Mandate he was one of many influential Alawite leaders who signed on to this letter which would be sent to the French Prime Minister Léon Blum (who happened to be the first Jewish PM of France).
