The band consisted of Solihull teenagers Epic Soundtracks (real name Kevin Paul Godfrey), his brother Nikki Sudden (real name Adrian Nicholas Godfrey), Jowe Head (Stephen Bird), Biggles Books (Richard Scaldwell), Phones Sportsman (David Barrington) and John "Golden" Cockrill.

Christened with the name David Barrington by his parents, Phones started as an inspired multi-instrumentalist in the scene that evolved into Swell Maps. He had a quirky, tuneful, expressive voice, and it seemed that he could pick up anything and get an inspired sound out of it: guitars, flutes, keyboards, harmonica, and found objects.

The first time was at Union Pool and I admitted to him that Phones B. Sportsman is my all time favorite punk rock name. He told me the its origin but I was so drunk that I promptly forgot.
