En 1964 forma su primera banda, The Untilers, junto a Pat Rushing. Durante cuatro años actúan en los locales de la zona hasta que John entra a formar parte de The Brotherhood Band.

Guru Guru is a German krautrock band formed in 1968 as The Guru Guru Groove by Mani Neumeier (drums), Uli Trepte (bass) and Eddy Naegeli (guitar), later replaced by the American Jim Kennedy.
